As part of its ongoing commitment to youth goaltending development across the United States, USA Hockey will pilot a new breed of goalie development camps this spring and summer in two of its districts.
These invite-based camps will gather top male and female goalies in the 2002 and 2003 birth years, along with their parents and goalie coaches, for three days of focused training, communication and education led by Phil Osaer, goaltending manager for USA Hockey's American Development Model, Kevin Reiter, national goaltending coach, and USA Hockey goaltending development coordinators.
The first of the pilot program camps will occur May 19-21, 2017, in the Pacific District at Sno-King Ice Arena in Renton, Washington. The second camp is scheduled for Aug. 11-13, 2017, in the Mid-America District on the campus of Kent State University. Each camp will include boys from the 2002 birth year and girls from the 2003 birth year. Players, parents and goaltending coaches will be involved together throughout the entire camp process to enable more effective in-season coaching and communication. In addition, all participating goaltenders will be trained to coach first- and second-year goalies, so they can bring insights, skills and leadership back to their local associations to improve club culture and mentorship for new goaltenders. Goalie coaches who attend and complete the development camps will earn their next level of certification in USA Hockey's Coaching Education Program.
“We’re excited about this pilot program and the wide-reaching benefits it can have not only for the invitees, but for goaltenders throughout their programs,” said Osaer. “It’ll be a terrific opportunity for goaltenders to refine their own skills and learn ways to take control of their own development with the support of their coaches and families.”
Goaltenders will be selected for the camp by a committee of evaluators including Osaer, USA Hockey goaltending development coordinators, USA Hockey goalie coaches, Strelow Camp regional mentors and district player development personnel. Goaltenders will receive their invitation approximately two months prior to each camp.
